More About Civil War Round Table of Fairfield County Battle of the Crater: Petersburg 1864

The Battle of the Crater was truly a perfect hell of blood. It involved a combat scheme devised by the Federals to break the stalemate in the trench lines around Petersburg. The dubious tactical merit of the plan was initially opposed by Grant and Meade, but Burnside ultimately prevailed. The idea was to dig a 500 foot tunnel 20 feet under a Confederate artillery salient, blow it up, and exploit the gap with an infantry charge. Our speaker will explain the fiasco that ensued and the concept of “The Black Flag”, in which “No Quarter” was given to black troops attempting to surrender.

Will Greene is an old friend of the Roundtable going back to 1990 with his presentation on Antietam. In subsequent years he delivered talks on the XII Corps at Gettysburg (1992), Petersburg Breakthrough (1997), Causes of the Civil War (1998), War in the Trans-Mississippi (2001), Cold Harbor (2002), the Petersburg Campaign (2006) and Chickamauga/Chattanooga (2015).

Will served as an historian with the National Park Service for 16 years, most notably at the Fredericksburg/Chancellorsville/Wilderness/Spotsylvania Military Park. For 22 years he was the Executive Director at Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier in Petersburg, VA. He has contributed more than 20 articles to leading Civil War journals and has written books entitled Breaking the Backbone of the Rebellion: The Final Battles of the Petersburg Campaign; Civil War Petersburg: Confederate City in the Crucible of War; and is currently working on a 3 volume history of the Petersburg Campaign.
