More About Juneteenth Commemoration

Bring the family out to celebrate and enjoy the activities: make a commemorative button or sash at the craft table, drill with the soldiers and mingle with the reenactors, or earn a Jr. Ranger badge!
Juneteenth is a holiday to commemorate celebrations after the end of the Civil War, Mainly those resulting from Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger’s Order No 3, as proclaimed on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, TX. This martial order was given to enforce the conditions of President Lincoln’s 1862 Emancipation Proclamation; as some 250,000 were still held under enslaved conditions in Texas. Juneteenth “Independence Day” is celebrated in 43 states and Washington, DC. Theodore Roosevelt Island was the mustering point and training area for the 1st Regiment of US Colored Troops during the Civil War; before they were sent to battle.

There will be performances by Kuumba Kids, and Juneteenth refreshments provided by Natural Choices.
