More About Barbara Berenson on Votes for Women - Wayland Public Library

Raytheon Room, Wayland Public Library, September 3-30

Amendment to the U.S. Constitution: It states, "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." You can look forward to spring events by the Wayland Museum & Historical Society and the Wayland High School History Project about the long road to woman suffrage. Check out Wayland resident Jessica Henderson’s profile at the Wayland History Project. In the meantime enjoy this program at the Wayland Library.

Long before the Civil War, Lucy Stone and other abolitionists launched the organized women's movement. After the war, state activists founded the Boston-based American Woman Suffrage Association to lead campaigns across the country. Their work laid the foundation for the next generation of suffragists to triumph over tradition. Barbara Berenson is the author of Massachusetts in the Woman Suffrage Movement: Revolutionary Reformers (2018) which tells this story.
