More About Emma’s Revolution at Voices Cafe

Smart, funny and informative-- like Rachel Maddow and Jon Stewart with guitars. That’s Pat Humphries and Sandy O of Emma's Revolution.

Tickets are $25 and are available for purchase online at voicescafe.org or by calling David Vita at 203.227.7205 x 14.

Song’s by the dynamic, award-winning activist duo have been sung for the Dalai Lama, praised by Pete Seeger, and covered by Holly Near. With beautiful harmonies and genre-defying eclecticism, Emma’s Revolution delivers the energy and strength of their convictions, in an uprising of truth and hope for these tumultuous times.

Pete Seeger said, "The powers that be can control the media but it's hard to stop a good song... Pat's songs will be sung well into the 22nd century."

Their inspiring, gutsy, rockin’ music has been praised by The New York Times as, "Fervent and heartfelt."

Emma’s Revolution's latest CD, Revolution Now, garnered top acclaim from radio stations across the country focusing on folk and acoustic music: Top Artist #20 (just after Joan Baez), Top Album #24 (just after Bela Fleck) and Top Song #25 "Sing People Sing" (just after Rhiannon Giddens).

“Sing People Sing” is a loving tribute to the late Pete Seeger—a friend and mentor to the duo—that captures his unique ability to empower an audience with harmony and hope. This show will include songs and stories in celebration of the 100th birthday of Pete Seeger.

Revolution Now also includes their beautiful setting of Woody Guthrie’s plaintive lyric, “Revolutionary Mind”, one of the many lyrics Woody left behind without an existing melody.

On the recording, Emma's Revolution covers issues from reproductive justice to refugees and Black Lives Matter to the sustaining power of love. With a core sound featuring their signature exquisite harmonies and acoustic guitars, their songs span styles from folk to jazz and funk to rock with hope, humor, and passion that can turn tears into laughter and cynicism into action.

Revolution Now brings these tools of inspiration and motivation to fuel today's resistance movements.

Their first song collaboration, “If I Give Your Name,” about undocumented workers killed in the World Trade Center on 9/11 won the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting competition.

They tour 200 days a year and, in the spirit of Emma Goldman's famous attribution, “If I can't dance, I don't want to be part of your revolution,” Emma's Revolution has brought their uprising of truth, hope, and a dash of irreverence to thousands of concerts and activist events across the US and abroad. They’ve even sung “We Are One” in the De-Militarized Zone, singing with family members separated by the division between North and South Korea.

"Boasting gorgeous close harmonies and unsinkable tunefulness, Emma’s Revolution is a classic, globetrotting folk duo. Their music is progressive, socially-conscious, confrontational, and shot-through with intelligence and cutting humor”, wrote the The Iowa City Press-Citizen.
