  • | NATL - National Holidays, National Holidays, Patriotic, US Military
    - Memorial Day, an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, at least, it marks the beginning of summer.

  • | 7:00am - 2:00pm | Charity, Fundraiser, bike, bicycle, biking, hike, hiking, fundraiser, cerebral, palsy, disabilities
    - The start/finish is at the Stanton Middle School, 1175 Hudson Rd., Kent, OH. (Stanton is west of the high school where last year’s event was held.) Check-in is from 7:00 to 9:30 AM (10:30 AM for short-route riders and for walkers) on the day of the ride/hike. Save by pre-registering online at http://bit.ly/1ScWOZS or by mail at the address below. (Registration "at the door" is $40.)

The routes for 2016 are new, with a variety of bike routes for all levels of experience and abilities ranging from 10k to 100k, and walks of 2-5k. The two shorter bike routes are family and young rider friendly following the newly paved Kent-Ravenna bike/hike trail. (There are street/road crossings on the trail where younger riders need to be monitored by older/responsible family members.)

Links to 2016 PwP Kent Routes: http://bit.ly/1ScWOZS

The riding routes will travel roads and trails of Kent and surrounding communities in Portage and Summit counties and will be supported again with conveniently located rest areas providing light refreshments and water. The longer rides will also be patrolled by SAG drivers if any assistance is needed by riders.

The family-friendly walking routes follow the school's cross-country trail or pass through nearby Kent communities.

Participants select a route to ride or walk at their own pace. Just plan to finish between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. The event site will close at 2 p.m.

Participants can enjoy complimentary lunch, music, massages, and door prizes at the completion of their journey, starting at 10:30 a.m. Celtic Rush (formerly the Akron Ceili Band) returns again for your listening enjoyment. (For those interested, they will be selling copies of their CDs.)

A bike tune-up station, sponsored by Kent Cycle will be located at the start/finish.

A raffle will be held to win a “Raleigh Detour 1” bicycle valued at over $300 donated by Kent Cycle. Raffle tickets can be purchased when riders pre-register, from a volunteer, or on the day of the event. Bike Raffle and Door Prize drawings start at 10:15… check the posted list to see if you won!

If you need something else to do after our event you can visit Kent’s newly developed downtown area which in fact will be hosting the 10th annual Main Street Kent Art & Wine Festival from 12 p.m. - 10 p.m.

Pedal-with-Pete is also searching for event volunteers and door prize donations.

The foundation is all volunteer-based, with approximately 85% of the funds that are raised going directly to fund cerebral palsy research. Cerebral palsy is caused by abnormalities in parts of the brain that control muscle movements, therefore the research can lead to life-improving treatments. Because Pedal-with-Pete is a 501(c)3 organization, all donations are fully tax-deductible. Pedal-with-Pete was founded by longtime Kent resident Peter Zeidner, who has cerebral palsy, because of the lack of research on the condition. Since its inception in 1993, the foundation has raised more than $1,000,000 for CP research.

If you want to help Pete with his mission to fund CP research,

Mail your donation to Pedal-with-Pete, P.O. Box 274, Kent, Ohio 44240 or add a donation when you register for this event.
Register here for the Kent ride or walk.
Contact ride co-chair Jim Stroble at strobes@neo.rr.com to volunteer or donate door prizes.

    Pedal-with-Pete thanks you!
