    - Community-wide Graduation Summit Focuses on
“Closing the Achievement Gap” in Education

Each year, one in five students in the U.S. drops out of high school before graduation. United Way of Greater Chattanooga and the Hamilton County Department of Education are working together to change this trend by hosting the GradNation Summit here in Chattanooga.

The Chattanooga GradNation Education Summit is part of the 100 Community Summits launched by America’s Promise Alliance. The goal of these Community Summits is to create a national movement to meet the GradNation national campaign goal of a 90% high school graduation rate by 2020.

The public portion of the Chattanooga Community GradNation Summit will be held on Monday, July 20, 2015, at First Presbyterian Church, downtown Chattanooga, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The focus of the Summit will be on building Early Childhood Education and Out of School time collaborative partnerships to address the achievement gaps for school readiness and successful graduation.

Examples of deliverables from the Summit include:
    · Logistics needed to incorporate pre-literacy technology in early childhood programs to ensure that 85% of children enter Kindergarten with the skills needed to succeed in school
    · Development of a comprehensive Early Warning and Intervention System that can be replicated in all Elementary and Middle Schools in Hamilton County

The Summit will include keynote speakers Joanna Fox - senior policy analyst and program developer for Everyone Graduates, a Research Program of Johns Hopkins University – and Dr. Vicki Kirk, Deputy Commissioner from the Tennessee Department of Education, both of whom will discuss the current state of education nationally and in Tennessee.

The community is invited to participate in Community Action Workshops that will address Early Childhood Readiness, Foundational Literacy, Middle School transition and High School graduation strategies to improve the Hamilton County graduation rate. Youth and community panels will address challenges and supports needed for all children to be successful in school.

Who is invited to attend? Leaders from businesses, civic organizations, nonprofits, local government, public schools, higher education, foundations, faith-based organizations, parents and young people - anyone interested in working together to create better outcomes for our youth and a better community for all.

The Summit is free to the public thanks to support from GradNation and national partner AT&T, UNUM, the City of Chattanooga Youth and Family Department, Hamilton County’s Read20, the Hamilton County Department of Education, and United Way of Greater Chattanooga.

If you are interested in attending, please register at uwchatt.org/GradNation by Wednesday, July 15, 2015. If you have any questions, please contact Jamie Bergmann at jamiebergmann@uwchatt.org or 752-0318.
