Posted by RTSC at the Federation for Children with Special Needs

Become a Special Education Volunteer - Amherst Training! - Are you interested in making a difference in the life of a student in your community? Become a Special Education Surrogate Parent (SESP) volunteer! SESPs make educational decisions for students in Massachusetts whose parents are unknown or unavailable. They meet with their assigned student or observe them in the classroom, receive all progress reports and report cards, and attend IEP meetings as an acting surrogate parent.

The Recruitment, Training & Support Center at the Federation for Children with Special Needs offers orientation trainings for parents, professionals, community members and others interested in becoming SESPs. This training helps potential volunteers learn about the special education decision-making services that SESPs provide, and additional topics like complex childhood trauma, incorporating goals into the Individualized Education Programs, and helpful tips for SESPs.
