It will be another fun-filled, star-studded awards ceremony honoring the top music videos of the past year -- when the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards airs live in primetime this summer on ... (where else?) MTV.

2021 MTV VMA rewind

2021 MTV VMA nominees (also see WINNERS, below) were announced on August 11 with Justin Bieber and Megan Thee Stallion leading the pack with seven for Bieber and six for Stallion.

Other top nomineess included Billie Eilish, BTS, Doja Cat, Drake, Giveon and Lil Nas X who follow with five nods each.

Besides a return to New York and a live audience this year, there was also a special tribute in honor of the 20th anniversary of 9/11 during this year's ceremony.

Performing at the 2021 Video Music Awards were none other than top nominee Justin Bieber in his first VMA appearance in six years, joined by Lil Nas X, Camilia Cabello, Machine Gun Kelly, Ed Sheeran, and Olivia Rodrigo and Kacey Musgraves making their VMA debuts.

Camila Cabello gave a live performance of her hit single "Don't Go Yet" while Machine Gun Kelly delivered a premiere live performance of his new single, "Paper Cuts".

Adding to the performance lineup was Chlöe, Doja Cat, Shawn Mendes, Twenty One Pilots, and a special performance from Foo Fighters, (recipients of the MTV Global Icon Award),

• The very first MTV VMA award show in 1984 was hosted by Bette Midler and Dan Akroyd.

• More than a two dozen categories have been dropped by the VMA lineup over the years, including Best Artist Website and Best Video Game Soundtrack (and does anyone remember Ringtone of the Year?)

• The award for Quadruple Threat of the Year was given out just once, in 2007, to Justin Timberlake.



• Madonna is the winning-est music artist of all time with 20 Moonmen, more than Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson combined.

• American audiences were stunned by the twerkfest by Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke at the 2013 VMA's, wracking up more than 150 formal complaints to the FCC for their naughtier-than-thou performance.

• The first nominees for music videos in Spanish were announced at the 2005 VMAs that also featured live performances by Shakira, Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, and Tego Calderon.

• The most awarded music video of all time is Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer," which took home a total of nine Moonmen at the 1987 VMAs.
