More About The monument depicts a man with a sledgehammer and an anvil looking towards the stars
We visited Sleepy Hollow Cemetery this past summer to examine a nearby mausoleum when we saw this memorial sculpture for Henry Villard. The sculpture is called The End of the Day’s Work by Vienna born sculpture, Carl Bitter. The monument depicts a man with a sledgehammer and an anvil looking towards the stars. It is thought that the inspiration for the sculpture was attributed to Villard's connection to the Northern Pacific Railway. However, we were more struck by the man's gaze to the stars; perhaps implying Villard's belief that after a lifetime of hard work and generous philanthropy his soul would be among the stars of heaven. Obviously our interpretation is one among many who have studied this magnificent piece of work.
