More About Change Smoke Detector Batteries

Change Smoke Detector batteries twice a year

A smoke detector is a device that senses smoke, typically as an indicator of fire. Smoke detectors are usually housed in plastic enclosures, typically shaped like a disk about 150 millimeters in diameter and 25 millimeters thick, but shape and size vary. Smoke can be detected either optically or by physical process. Detectors may use one or both sensing methods. Sensitive alarms can be used to detect and deter smoking in banned areas. Smoke detectors in large commercial and industrial buildings are usually connected to a central fire alarm system.

When the alarm starts chirping, it is important to replace the battery right away. The majority of smoke detectors use 9 volt batteries.

Most smoke detectors, including the First Alert Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Detector, emit a chirp that signals the end of their working life.

Smoke may kill occupants long before flames are visible. Smoke detectors remain awake all day and all night, continually sensing even the faintest evidence of smoke and fire.
