More About Galesburg Community Chorus Performs “Carmina Burana” at its Spring Concert

The Galesburg Community Chorus’ annual spring concert, featuring Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, will take place on Saturday, April 27th. This extensive choral work is one of the most well-loved and exciting scenic oratorios of the 20th century, with powerful music, driving rhythms, and strong characterization of its colorful text.

The work will be performed in its chamber orchestration for two pianos and percussion and will include three soloists, soprano Sarah Kropski from Chicago, countertenor Jake Johansen from Galesburg, and baritone Nicholas Ward from Chicago.

Chorus Director Tim Pahel says “we are so excited to be performing Carmina Burana again! The music is so fun and full of life and energy. And our membership went from 40 to 60 singers this semester because we are doing this work! We know that the concert is going to be thrilling.”

The Chorus’ spring concert each year is named the “Charles J. and Mary Runyon Gibbs Spring Concert” in honor of the Gibbs’ decades of dedication to and involvement with the Chorus. This year the concert is particularly dedicated to Mary Gibbs, who recently passed away. There will be a memorial service for her at 11am on the morning of the concert at First Presbyterian Church.
