More About Backyard Boat Engineering. Turning “Tetra Paks” Into Working Sailboats ⛵
Who would guess a fruit juice carton could become a sailing boat? The familiar Tetra Pak carton turns out to be a surprisingly good hull for a pond yacht. Its layered structure traps air inside, which helps it float smoothly even in choppy pond water.
After rinsing the carton, seal the opening tightly with waterproof tape or glue. A small wooden dowel makes a sturdy mast, while stiff paper, cloth, or thin plastic forms the sail.
Try experimenting with these simple additions:
· Small pebbles or washers inside the carton for ballast
· A cardboard fin or plastic strip as a rudder
· Two cartons taped side by side to form a catamaran
