More About The Art of Relief with Linocut Workshop
“Relief printing” describes the printmaking technique where an image is carved into a block of wood, linoleum, or other stock. This class explores the possibilities of relief using linocut, an aptly named printmaking process where the artist cuts through a linoleum sheet to create their image.
Using gouges, knives, and even embossing, the artist carves away the linoleum to create the negative space of their image. The linoleum left standing in relief is inked with a hand roller, then transferred to paper using pressure. These blocks may be printed successfully by hand or with a press, and are strong enough to withstand hundreds of prints.
