More About Deborah Stewart, "Propagation and Endurance"

Buffalo Arts Studio is excited to present “Propagation and Endurance,” a new body of work by ceramic artist and sculptor Deborah Stewart that highlights the strength in fragility through clay and metal seed pod ceramic sculptures. The exhibition is on view from June 26 through August 1, 2026. An opening reception will be held on Friday, June 26, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm as part of M&T Fourth Friday at Tri-Main.

Seed pods are the protective casing on plants that enable natural propagation: the protecting, maturing, and dispersing of seeds that can grow into new plants. This structure allows delicate flora to reproduce, endure, and continue into the future despite intense environmental, climate, and other external forces. For "Propagation and Endurance," robust clay seed pods are complemented by minimal steel and wire structural forms, blurring the line between what appears fragile and what appears formidable. By pairing the vulnerability of clay with the rigid strength of metal, Stewart encourages respect and acknowledgement of the enduring power of fragile things.
