See the Lilly Library’s rare original copy of the Declaration of Independence and learn all about it from Erika Dowell, curator of the library’s 2026 exhibition about the nation’s founding document.
The Declaration of Independence: The Motives, The Moment is an exhibition exploring the journey taken by the nation’s founders. How colonial leaders go from loyal subjects of the British empire to risking everything by becoming revolutionaries? Take an insightful tour of the exhibition from the curator, with up close looks at Revolutionary War era correspondence, books and manuscripts that influenced the revolutionaries, and media that spread the word about the declaration.
Light refreshments will be offered. Come learn something new about the nation’s founding and have a snack in Indiana University’s rare book library!
Tours are offered at noon, 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. RSVP requested for planning of refreshments and staffing.
