A BRAND-NEW MYRTLE BEACH SUPPORT GROUP
“LIVING LOSSES” SUPPORT GROUP
(A previously unacknowledged and unsupported pain & loss group of people)
There are many kinds of support groups existing, for instance, for various diseases, alcoholism, addictions, bereavement groups, and more. But there is an area of great hurt and loss that is not recognized, and that is the group of people dealing with “LIVING LOSSES.” This group is for all the people who are dealing with the following losses, providing a place to meet together and talk with others going through the same pain. There are strength and mental help in talking about things. And you will find that you are definitely not alone.
When someone we love passes away, we go through the rituals of love and ceremonies of goodbye, either with a funeral and burial or celebration of life memorial gatherings. These bring about a type of ‘closure’ to which most of us are accustomed.
We currently have a Weekly Bereavement/Loss Support Group which just reached its 9th year of providing support throughout the grieving journey. But during these years, a surprising, recurrent situation manifested from various attendees until it became quite disturbing and gripped our attention.
“LIVING LOSSES” – There are many grandparents whose own children have families now, blessing them with the grandchildren they’ve waited for. Grandchildren are often the bright light and joy of their later years.
But something unsettling has been happening. So many of our Bereavement Group attendees, while going through their loss, expressed an additional great sadness. Their own children would not allow them to have access to their grandchildren and, most often, without any explanation.
These grandparents love their grandchildren who are living either near or far. They want to visit them, take them places, hold them, hug them, talk to them, sing to them, love them, but the grandparents are prevented from building a relationship with them. They harbor great sorrow, not only for the loss of relationship with their grandchildren, but also because of these actions of their own children, and the unknown reasons for this. They live this loss every day of their lives. Some would judge and say, 'there’s got to be a valid reason,' but we have found that for every single one who’ve attended the Bereavement Group, they did not know why. They were not told why. Most people know the stress that the “unknown” can cause. And most often, the children who prevented the involvement with the grandchildren were in the very same age group. We found that to be a very interesting common thread.
If this had not happened over and over again in our Bereavement Group, we would have never known of this kind of pain out there – everyday “LIVING LOSSES.” With “LIVING LOSSES” there is no closure. Someone has not passed from this life. They are actually still here. Still living. Knowing every day, they are here. Still loving them, but unreachable, untouchable.
• We had a wife mourning the loss of a living spouse who had a sudden mental breakdown. He is no longer the same person she married. (This could also include Alzheimer’s or dementia family members.)
• We had a young woman come who was mourning the loss of her entire family, whom she loves, who are all very much alive. An ongoing, major disagreement caused the family to disown and shun her.
• People who still love their spouse but lost their spouse by separation or divorce or the spouse just decided they didn’t want to be married anymore.
• A love relationship broke up when one decided to move away or had a job relocation or the person just wanted something new.
• A person, who, in a breakup, lost the pet they loved so much, because the other person claimed the pet and now, they can’t see the pet anymore. We know pets become family.
• There are other “LIVING LOSSES” scenarios out there not mentioned here as well.

More About The Well By The Sea Church
The Well By The Sea is a non-traditional, contemporary church in the Anglican tradition. Our worship is contemporary in that we worship with Praise and Worship music, contemporary Christian music and traditional hymns that have sometimes been set to more contemporary music . . . sometimes not. We utilize the liturgy, which dates back to the early Christian Church. In fact, the liturgy we use can be traced back as far as at least 215 A.D. So in our worship services, you will find a blend of the old and the new, with lively participation from the congregation. We meet on Sundays at 10:30am and offer an in-depth Bible Study on Thursday evenings at 6:30pm.
