Sharing a bedroom teaches children a great deal, but it works best when the room is designed to give each child a genuine sense of their own space within it.

· Give each child a visually distinct zone: Different bedding, a specific colour on a section of wall, or individually chosen artwork above each bed signals that this part of the room belongs to one child.

· Storage that is clearly assigned to each person: Shared storage almost always becomes contested storage. Separate drawers, shelves, and hooks labelled or colour-coded by child remove a major source of daily disagreement. 👦

· Plan for one quiet retreat even in a shared space: A canopy over a bed, a small reading tent, or a curtain on a ceiling track gives at least one child a place to be alone in the room.
