More About Why Empty Space Is One of the Most Valuable Design Elements

Empty space gives the eye somewhere to rest. In a room where every surface is occupied and every wall is filled, the brain has to process everything simultaneously. Space reduces that load and makes a room feel calmer, larger, and more considered.

Emptiness creates contrast that makes what is there more visible and more meaningful. A single piece of art on an otherwise bare wall is experienced entirely differently from the same piece surrounded by ten others. The space around an object is part of the object. 🏠

Designing with restraint is harder than filling space, which is part of why it is less common. It requires confidence in what is already there. The rooms that feel most peaceful and most memorable almost always have more empty space than their owners initially felt comfortable with.
