More About Fall Bird Migration at the Highland Heron Rookery - Learn and Celebrate!
Highland Neighbors for Sustainability (HNS) invites the public to its third annual “Migration Celebration” on Saturday, September 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Highland Heron Rookery wetland along the bike trail (located at the corner of Liable Rd & Laporte St. in Highland, IN). The event is free and open to the public, and meant for all ages. The event is meant to educate about the Highland Heron Rookery and celebrate the amazing number of birds that pass over our area of the Great Lakes on their way to their winter homes.
Experienced birders will help visitors observe birds, share tips on spotting and identifying different species, and use binoculars and other birding tools. The Highland Neighbors for Sustainability table will have binoculars to borrow and highlight free resources such as "Nature Hike” kits available for reservation and checkout from any Lake County Indiana Public Library.
A local artist from Highland Arts Council will create a live plein air painting, capturing the natural beauty of the wetlands as visitors explore the site.
This year's theme, ‘Bird Safety’, focuses on several ways everyone can help protect birds. Visitors will learn simple ways to reduce window collisions and protect birds from predators, and Wild Birds Unlimited will have bird-safe window decals available for purchase.
Several local organizations will be onsite with educational materials and share updates on the ongoing wetland restoration and its importance to migrating birds. Participating organizations include The Nature Conservancy, The Wetlands Initiative, the Great Lakes Audubon Chapter, the Dunes-Calumet Audubon Chapter, Lake County Parks, and Wild Ones Gibson Woods Chapter.
This event is outdoors along a bike path and wetland area. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring their own binoculars if they have them, although binoculars will be available to borrow.
