Throughout the nineteenth century, fictional ghost stories developed in conjunction with the Victorian fascination with death and the quest for proof of the supernatural. This era was a time of transition democratically, economically and industrially. These changes cast shadows over daily life and thought, bringing both hope and a dash of anxiety. In literature, the ghost story offered a way of anchoring the past age to an unsettled present. These stories allowed the Victorians to keep one foot in the land of the living... and one beyond the veil.

Our program begins with a brief lecture on the significance and history of the Victorian ghost story, followed by a live reading of select poems and stories from the era, with live musical accompaniment.
