Thunderbird Artists’ Festival’s Featured Artist for Scottsdale Waterfront: Metal Sculptor, Robert Hyde

Robert Alan Hyde was born August 15, 1946, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and raised in Malibu and Santa Cruz, California. At age 16, he was awarded a national gold medal in a scholastic arts contest and went on to attend the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland on scholarship. By 21, he opened his first art gallery and gift shop, The Shire Market, at The Troubadour — the famous folk club in West Hollywood, California.

In 1970, he returned to Salt Lake City, where he founded The Artist's Workshop and Gallery in Trolley Square, which he operated from 1972 to 1983. After closing the gallery, he continued to create metal sculptures from his home studio until 2006. In 2006, he and his partner Trevor, together for 22 years, relocated to the Berkshires in Washington, Massachusetts.

Reflecting on his lifelong practice, Hyde shares: “Since I was a child I have felt the need to create artistically through a variety of mediums. During this artistic process I feel a sense of peace and I am drawn into a world of my own. My connection to myself and to the world around me becomes more real when I am in this artistic state of mind.”
