More About The Unexpected History of the Sandwich 🥪
The sandwich seems like one of those foods that has simply always existed. Bread has been used to hold other foods for centuries, but the word “sandwich” has a much more specific story.
It is generally linked to John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, in eighteenth-century England. Legend has it that he asked for a meal he could enjoy without pausing his activities, inspiring the simple idea of tucking meat between two pieces of bread. 💡
From there, the simple idea traveled everywhere. America turned it into the lunchbox staple. France developed its own versions. Italy gave the world panini. Vietnam created the bánh mì. Each culture added its own bread, fillings, flavors, and traditions.
That is what makes the sandwich so interesting. It is one basic idea with countless interpretations.
