
More About Youth & Family Day at Indiana Dunes National Park 🐦🔍
Join us for a full day of family-oriented programs at the Indiana Dunes State Park Nature Center on Saturday, May 16.
Indiana Audubon Society is hosting a full day of free youth and family-focused birding activities from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Central time at the Indiana Dunes State Park Nature Center.
The event features hourly hikes for beginners, bluebird house building, bird-themed crafts and activities, games, a live bird presentation from Humane Indiana Wildlife, and more. Many activities may be rain or shine.
EVENT ACTIVITIES
All-Day Activities (ongoing, while supplies last):
- Bluebird nest box kit building
- Owl Pellet Dissection
Timed Activities:
- 9–10 a.m. | Guided birding walk (first of hourly walks) and DIY binoculars activity
- 10–11 a.m. | Guided birding walk, sassafras activity, and bird bingo
- 11 a.m.–12 p.m. | Guided birding walk, Humane Indiana live birds of prey program, decorate your own bird frisbee fan, and face painting begins (runs until 3 p.m.)
- 12–1 p.m. | Guided birding walk and bird bingo
- 1–2 p.m. | Guided birding walk, Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue program, and hummingbird suncatchers activity
- 2–3 p.m. | Guided birding walk and bird bingo
- 3–4 p.m. | Guided birding walk (last walk); face painting ends

- Dunes Learning Center
- Gabis Arboretum at Purdue Northwest
- Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue (inside the Nature Center)
- Indiana Audubon
- Miller Beach Community Theater
- Porter County Soil and Water Conservation District
- Southern Indiana Cerulean Warbler Birdscape
- The Nature Conservancy of Indiana
REGISTRATION
This event is free, and registration is not required. However, entry to the state park requires either an annual park pass or a fee of $7 for Indiana residents and $15 for non-residents.
ACCESSIBILITY
The Indiana Dunes State Park Nature Center has accessible entrances, rooms, seats, and restrooms. The hourly bird hikes will include moderate walks on nearby trails at the Indiana Dunes State Park.
