Hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are popular winter pastimes along the lakeshore trails. Glenwood Dunes Trail is the best option for cross-country skiing with 6.4 miles of interconnecting loops traveling through gently rolling wooded dunes. Advanced skiers can enjoy the three-mile Tolleston Dunes Trail, which features some difficult hills that can be tricky to navigate. Rentals are not available.

The sledding hill at Lemon Lake will be open December 1 through March when adequate snow base allows. The gate fee is charged when a gatekeeper is on duty. Call after 9 a.m. to see if the hill is open before you come out. Call Lemon Lake at 219-663-7627 or the Lemon Lake Ski Rental building at 219-663-2418.
There are no rentals, so bring your own tube or plastic sled. No wooden or metal runner sleds or snowboards are allowed for safety purposes.

Looking for a great way to exercise in a beautiful setting? Then come out to your Lake County Parks and cross country ski. Each park that offers this activity has several miles of trails through wooded areas as well as open fields. The trails are designed for a beginner as well as the experienced skier, so don't worry if you have never tried cross country skiing before.
Cross country ski rentals open at Lemon Lake and Stoney Run on Fri, Sat, Sun and school holidays 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Weather and snow conditions permitting. All equipment must be returned by 4:30 p.m. Note: Closing times may vary due to darkness. The equestrian trail is closed at Stoney Run from December through March. Ski trails are groomed at Lemon Lake and Stoney Run when there is at least a four inch snow base.

Inner tubes for sledding are available for rental at Plum Creek Nature Center for use on the sled hill at Goodenow Grove Nature Preserve when conditions allow after December 1. Renters must be 18 years old and bring a valid driver's license or state ID. Tubes may be limited to one tube per license/ID. Tubes are rented until 3 p.m. and must be returned to the Nature Center by 4 p.m.
