More About Indiana Dunes FAQs: State Park vs. National Park Explained β°οΈπ
π― Know Before You Go: State Park vs. National Park
Indiana Dunes National Park and Indiana Dunes State Park are two separate parks located right next to each other along the southern shore of Lake Michigan.
While they share the same beautiful shoreline and towering sand dunes, they are managed by different park systems, offer different experiences, and have separate entrances and fees.
Choosing which one to visit depends on the kind of experience youβre looking for.
β°οΈ The dunes themselves were formed more than 10,000 years ago when glaciers retreated north, leaving behind massive deposits of sand that wind and waves continue to shape today.
What remains is one of the most unique landscapes in the Midwest β where beaches, forests, wetlands, and towering dunes all exist within the same stretch of shoreline.
