Lindenhurst Park District's Active Adults Trip: Lake County History Tour (Adults 50+)

Let's tour two National Historic Landmarks located here in Lake County with the Lake County Forest Preserve. Our first stop will be Adlai Stevenson's home, which was designated a National Historic Landmark by the United States Secretary of the Interior in honor of prominent 20th-century statesman Adlai E. Stevenson II, who played a major role in the Cold War. Stevenson II was Governor of Illinois from 1949 to 1953, ran twice for President as the Democratic National Candidate in 1952 and 1956, and served as Ambassador to the United Nations during the Kennedy administration from 1961 to 1965. We will enjoy lunch at Eggspresso. Lunch options will be finalized closer to our trip date. Our final stop will be Fort Sheridan. The first infantry companies arrived in November 1887 under the command of Major William J. Lyster (1869-1947). In February 1888, the post was renamed Fort Sheridan to honor General Sheridan's service to Chicago, and his role in restoring order after the Chicago Fire of October 8, 1871. Sheridan was the first living general to have a post named in his honor. Fort Sheridan's buildings represent a significant period of architectural history. Prestigious Chicago architects Holabird and Roche were awarded the commission to design the buildings.
