    - Memorial Day, an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, at least, it marks the beginning of summer.

    - It won't be long before the scents and sounds wafting around the St. Andrew Community Center spread through northern New Jersey and surrounding areas at Big Greek Festival opens it doors.

A favorite of all ages, BIG GREEK FESTIVAL is a celebration of all things Greek, and the ambiance shows it. From festive flags adorning the community center and outdoor taverna - a contemporary take on a traditional Greek bar and grill, to the fully costumed youth showing off their talent, BIG GREEK FESTIVAL attracts patrons who sometimes drive more than an hour to get a tasty treat with family and friends.

Loyal patrons who've experienced the festival year after year know to schedule the event on their calendar early to be sure not to miss the once a year event.

New visitors find the mix of sights, sounds and delicious dishes a way to get a taste of culture and tradition that spans decades. The volunteers begin preparing the menu months in advance.

A certain favorite? Gyros, often accompanied by a selection from the bakery and bar.

Fans who enjoy being outdoors find the outdoor seating area under the tent a great way to keep an eye on their children, as they enjoy the games and activities in the area adjacent the tavern.

When twilight comes, the atmosphere becomes electric, featuring live entertainment from youth who've practiced all year, and live music from favorite Greek singers and entertainers. Sizzling, seasoned souvlaki becomes the perfect complement to any number of bar selections, especially with the exclusive Big Greek Festival drink, the "Blue Greek," with Greek Ouzo as its base.

The event is held on three consecutive days, beginning with a lunch on Friday and ending on Sunday with evening dinner and dancing. Visitors can stop by and pick up take out, or they can plan to spend the whole day to enjoy everything BIG GREEK FESTIVAL has to offer.

A must-do is a tour of the interior of the church, lead by Fr. John Theodosion. Visitors learn the meaning and craftsmanship that is applied to the hand carved woodwork and stunning painted icons. A visit to the festival is best topped off by Betty's Baklava Ice Cream and a visit to the church bookstore.

The festival is highlighted by a marketplace, modeled after traditional open markets, with a variety of local businesses and handicrafts, unique fashions, home decor and art.

Facilities are wheelchair accessible. Visa/Mastercard are accepted, and ATM is available onsite.

  • | 7:30pm - | Arts and Entertainment, Theater, Shakespeare, Drama, Tragedy
    - The Lord Stirling Theater Company will perform William Shakespeare’s “The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice,” in the English Barn Theater at the Farmstead Arts Center, 450 King George Road, Basking Ridge, NJ. “Othello” will open on Friday, June 1, at 7:30PM, with additional performances on June 2 at 7:30PM, June 3 at 2:00PM, June 8 and 9 at 7:30PM, and June 10 at 2:00PM. Tickets are $20 general admission, or $15 for seniors (65 and over), Farmstead Arts members, and students. Tickets may be purchased online at click for details or at the door (cash only).

Othello, the Moor, is a general in the Venetian army. He secretly marries Desdemona, the daughter of a prominent Venetian senator. Othello’s ensign, Iago, harbors jealousy and resentment towards the Moor for having promoted another soldier, Cassio, ahead of him. He also suspects that Othello has had an affair with his wife, Emilia. To get revenge, Iago devises a plan to plant suspicions in Othello’s mind that Desdemona has been unfaithful to him with Cassio. Iago’s lies and insinuations drive Othello mad with jealousy and incite him into a murderous rage, with tragic results.

Written around 1604, “Othello” is one of Shakespeare's most famous plays, and its themes of jealousy, manipulation, and division remain relevant to the present day.
