More About Rudders Explained: The Tiny Part That Decides Where a Boat Goes ⚓
A sailboat without a rudder behaves like a shopping cart with a broken wheel. It spins, drifts, and refuses to travel straight. That tiny piece at the back quietly controls the entire journey.
The rudder works by pushing against water as the boat moves forward. Turn it slightly left or right and the boat follows.
Stability also matters, which is why many model builders use a clever trick: the CD keel. A compact disc attached under the boat acts as ballast, keeping the boat upright when wind pushes hard on the sail.
Materials to Build a Rudder:
· Plastic cut from a bottle or container
· A wooden skewer for the rudder post
· Tape or glue for attachment
· A recycled CD for the keel
Try a new rudder design and email the Sail Monkey at TBClark123@gmail.com. Show how your boat turns smoother, sails straighter, or looks better on the water.
