More About Nature Academy with Hamilton County Parks

The Nature Academy is a program geared to teens and adults looking for an immersive experience in nature education, inspiration, and storytelling. Each meeting will be geared toward topics meant to provide a deeper, more meaningful connection with nature and provide ideas on how we can individually and through group practices be better stewards of our parks, local habitats, and ecosystem more broadly.

SCHEDULE
Thursday, March 7: Introduction to Astronomy
Astronomy enthusiast Dr. Doug Balogh will introduce us to the cosmos. He will also describe the capabilities of the powerful equipment he brought and give tips on making the most of the telescope you have stashed in your closet. If clear skies prevail, we will have a chance to view the night sky.

Thursday, April 11: I TOAD you Frogs are Cool
Jim Horton, current President of the Hoosier Herpetological Society will join us to help us feel warm and fuzzy about reptiles and amphibians. With a particular emphasis on frogs and toads, Jim will bring us up to speed on life-cycles, habitat and environmental issues. Let's get up close and personal with a few visiting, hairless, four-legged friends.

Thursday, May 9: Wild about Warblers
Migration is in full swing, and warblers receive a lot of attention. Noteworthy birder Scott Enochs will be showing us what all the fuss is about. He will share some of his knowledge on nesting, migration, and cool facts about these fast-moving, colorful songbirds.

Thursday, June 6: Wildflowers not Weeds
Not all plants are created equal. Native plants and wildflowers serve a special purpose for our Indiana ecology. Naturalist "Nature Dan" Popiela will present how our native wildflowers benefit us and have adapted for our Indiana environment. A hike to view and identify wildflowers (emphasizing those in bloom) will immediately follow the presentation.
