The Horry County Museum Quilt Gala has become a fixture on the Grand Strand. Started in 1994, the first Gala was held on the lawn of the Horry County Courthouse. Over the years the Gala has continued to grow and is now held at the Ocean Lakes Family Campground Recreation Center in Myrtle Beach.
Many different types of quilts are displayed at the Gala which represent a variety of techniques and skill levels. Categories include wearables, large quilts, medium quilts, small quilts, and a challenge quilt. The wearables are handmade garments sewn using a variety of quilting techniques. The challenge category changes each year and is based on preset restrictions. The 2018 challenge theme is “Life’s a Beach”. Quilters in this category are challenged to create a wall hanging that represents their ideal interpretation of the phrase using any color, style, or technique that they feel best represents coastal living.
Winners from each category will be voted on by the public and will receive a ribbon. The blue ribbon winners from each category are displayed in the Horry County Museum during the month of March.
In addition to displaying quilts, the Gala also hosts demonstrators and speakers, including featured speaker Kathy Aparicio. Local and regional vendors will also be on hand to support, consult, and aid the quilter with various quilting merchandise.
The Museum is grateful to have the support of local quilt guilds for many years to aid in the management, set-up, and break down of the Gala.
The 24th Annual Quilt Gala will be held Friday February 23rd from 10 am–4 pm and Saturday February 24th from 10am-4pm. Admission is $5.00 per person; Museum Members and children 12 and under are free.

Your child will be painted with a curly mustache or with an anchor tattoo, dressed with a lucky tea sure hunting vest and marched off to the ship.

Once aboard, the young pirates will learn the rules at sea aboard the Sea Gypsy and use a treasure map to find the sunken treasure. As the crew searches for clues, they discover that Pirate Pete, the smiliest, most rotten, pirate on the Seven Seas, is lurking nearby, and he has something our brave crew needs. Off we go into battle with our famous water cannons! Will the crew defeat Pirate Pete and find the sunken treasure!?!
Aboard the Sea Gypsy, we always find the treasure, we always defeat that Pirate Pete, and the children always walk away with incredible stories!

This seemed appropriate since the "Wings Over Myrtle Beach Air Show" will be coming to our area April 28th and 29th. It will include performances by the Blue Angels, etc. and the photographic possibilities will be amazing. Our other topic is "Photographing Bubbles" so bring your cameras. The Palmetto Photography Club started during 2017, but this meeting will be the beginning of our first complete year. It should be a great one for learning and enjoying photography with others who share your interest. Hope to see you there.

  • - A 1,210-pound bomb packed in a van exploded in the underground parking garage of the World Trade Center in New York City, killing six people and injuring more than 1,000 (mostly from smoke inhalation). The powerful blast left a crater 200 feet wide and several stories deep. The cost for damage to the building and disruption of business for the 360 companies with offices in the Center exceeded $591 million. Fifteen people - the fundamentalist Muslim cleric Sheik Omar Abdul Rahman and 14 of his followers were indicted for the bombing. Rahman was given a life sentence, and the others received prison terms of up to 240 years each.

Experience life on the one horse family farm in Horry County from 1900-1955 at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us for Wash Day on Tuesday, February 27th. Before there was electricity in the home, clothes were hung on a line to dry and didn't look good unless they were ironed. An iron would easily rust if it was not properly maintained and would ruin light colored clothing. In addition to the regular washing of clothes and linens, join us to see how an iron would have been cleaned, polished and used. Clothes washing demonstrations will take place from 9 AM until 3 PM. A free, hour long, guided tour of the farm will be available to the public starting at 3:00 PM.
The L. W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family from 1900-1955. The farm is free and open to the public and is located at the corner of Hwy 701 North and Harris Short Cut Road in Conway, SC. For more information, call the L. W. Welcome to Pirate Adventures of Myrtle Beach! A place where children come to experience the magic of sailing away in search of sunken treasure. Come aboard our pirate ship and get caught up in this real life adventure. Be amazed as our crew taps into the wonder of a child’s imagination.

    - The 2018 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with South Carolina A-Z. This film, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV, takes a light-hearted look at favorite places and homegrown things, spanning the alphabet to showcase all that South Carolina is and has to offer. From the ACE Basin and the Arthur Ravenel Bridge to the Yorktown aircraft carrier and Zentrum (BMW’s visitor’s center), South Carolina A to Z is a vivid look at the unique offerings of South Carolina. Cameras spotlight the familiar (Brookgreen Gardens, Palmetto trees) to the not-so-familiar (Edgefield pottery, locally-grown rice, UFO Welcome Center) for a glimpse of what makes our state so special.
The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, March 7th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.
The Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2018. For a full list of films, visit our website at click for details. For more information, call the Horry County Museum at 843-915-5320 or e-mail hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org.

Fun things to do in Socastee

Since 1986 the Town Planner Calendar has been keeping families across America up-to-date about events and other fun things to do right in their hometown.

Delivered free of charge every December to millions of homes across America, our full-sized, full-color calendar is a time-tested and beloved tool for helping families stay organized. The large date blocks are not only loaded with lots of nearby events and fun things to do, there's plenty of room for you to record your own family's important events like birthdays, anniversaries, parties -- anything you have planned -- so everybody in the house can see them whenever they go to the fridge, out the front door, or wherever you choose to display it.

But there's more! Every calendar is full of coupons from popular local merchants, so you can save money while supporting small businesses right in your hometown.

And don't miss our beautiful full-color photography! Every month you'll recognize a new photo from someplace close to home, submitted to us by a local photographer. If you'd like to have your own hometown photos included in our calendar, please contact your local publisher for more information.

We truly believe it's better to "keep it local". From coast to coast and border to border, our network of franchisees work with organizations and merchants right in their community to make sure you get the information and savings you care about. We prefer to feature family-friendly events that are a short walk or drive away, and coupons from local businesses so you can support your hometown economy.

If there's something happening close to home that folks in your neighborhood need to know about, why not submit it to us today? Please note that publication of your event is subject to approval by your local Town Planner publisher.

If there's no Town Planner calendar in your area, you could be looking at a great business opportunity! Town Planner franchisees set their own hours and can work out of their homes while providing a valuable service to both homeowners and local businesses in the area.
