More About Fall Hiking: Train Your Legs for the Way Down, Not Just the Way Up 🍁
A steep climb gets your attention, but the downhill portion of a hike can be just as demanding. Your legs have to control your body as gravity pulls you forward and down.
Prepare for the descent by focusing on:
1. Eccentric strength: Your muscles work while lengthening to control each step downhill. Exercises like controlled squats and step-downs can help build this ability. 🦵
2. Single-leg control: Trails are rarely perfectly flat. Your hips, knees, and ankles need to stabilize your body as you step over rocks, roots, and uneven ground.
3. Endurance: Fatigue can make your movements less controlled. Building leg endurance helps you maintain stability when the trail gets long.
A strong uphill hiker is not automatically a strong downhill hiker. Train for both directions.
Before your next trail adventure, build the strength and control to enjoy the whole hike. Evolution Physical Therapy & Fitness offers expert training in Darien, Stamford, Norwalk, and Greenwich. 👨💼
