More About Anniversary of First Lunar Landing
“That one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” – Neil Armstrong’s first words from the moon were heard all over the Earth on this day in 1969.
Neil Armstrong was Spacecraft Commander for Apollo 11 (July 16-2l, 1969) the first manned lunar landing mission, and holds the distinction of being the first man to walk on the moon. On July 20th, 1969, he stepped off the Lunar Module named "Eagle", onto the surface of the moon.
National Moon Day was proclaimed in 1971 by the then US President Richard Nixon to honor the anniversary of man's first moon landing.
