Terrorists from the extremist group al-Qaeda carried out coordinated attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., leading to the deaths of nearly 3,000 people. This tragic event changed U.S. foreign policy, led to the War on Terror, and drastically altered the nation’s security policies.
