More About Photography Show Opening- Heavenly Days in the Palouse

On Friday, March 24th, an opening of a photography show, Heavenly Days in the Palouse will begin a one month showing of the work of Tom Kretsch at Greens Farms Congregational Church, 11 Hillandale Road, Westport,Ct. The hours of the opening are 5:30 to 7:30P.M. The show runs until April 26th.

Tom Kretsch has lived in Westport for fifty years. He spent thirty-seven years as an educator of young children, teaching Physical Education in the Norwalk Public Schools. He always had a strong interest and passion for photography and upon retirement began to spend more time pursuing his dreams, capturing images on a number of themes both near and far from home. He started a business called Peaceful Places and has been marketing his work at outdoor art festivals, galleries and with interior decorators.

Tom published two books of his work, On the Road- Five Visions and Touching Maine.

Last June he made a trip to Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho to participate in a workshop in an area known as the Palouse. He had seen pictures of this magnificent and not so well- known part of this country and decided it would be an interesting journey to pursue. And he was not disappointed.

The Palouse is one of the largest wheat and legume producing areas in America. The undulating hills have been shaped by years of wind erosion, creating these hills of loess, sediment of dust and calcitrate that over the years has compacted and created a very fertile bed for growing. The word Palouse comes from the Native Americans, The Palos, who lived in these parts and later the French word, pelouse, meaning long and short grass.

The Palouse is truly a magnificent place filled with color, texture and shape. As light and shadow move across the hills the eyes take one on a magical journey which at times feels like one is looking at an abstract painting. The landscape is filled with colors that weave together an almost surreal world that takes your breath away. From a Butte overlooking the area, the perspective takes you into some truly remarkable places of wonder. Dotted between the wonderous landscape are beautiful barns and structures that when viewed from a distance bring that human touch to the landscape.
