In Indiana, township trustees are elected officials required by law to provide emergency assistance for basic necessities, which includes, but is not limited to, electric, water, and heating fuel bills. Assistance is not guaranteed; it is based on eligibility, and the trustee must determine if the applicant is in a state of emergency.
You must apply in the township where you live; however, eligibility standards and application processes vary by township. The trustee must make a decision within 72 hours (excluding weekends and holidays). In emergencies, assistance may be available the same day.
