More About MT VERNON ESTATE & GRISTMILL - Oct 20
Travel with Wolf's to Mount Vernon, Virginia to visit the most popular historic home in America and a lasting reminder of the life and legacy of the "Father of Our Country", George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate. George and Martha Washington acquired the mansion in 1754 and was their home for almost 45 years. Upon arrival you will have free time to walk the grounds to see the Gardens, Pioneer Farm, Washington's Tomb, Slave Memorial & Cemetery, and the wharf that was integral to his fishery business. You may also want to visit the Ford Orientation Center and Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center both offering a comprehensive and memorable experience that span Washington's lifetime. Lunch is on your own today while at the estate. Mid-afternoon, you will have a guided mansion tour included in your admission. The mansion is furnished and decorated to look as it did in 1799, the year he died. Washington expanded the home to reflect his status as a Virginia gentleman personally overseeing every detail of design, construction and decoration, all while away at war. Following the guided mansion tour, you will board the motorcoach and travel 3 miles to George Washington's Gristmill and Distillery for a guided tour at each. Washington constructed a gristmill at his Dogue Run Farm in 1770-1771. In 1791, he upgraded his operations to a new automated method in 1791 that moved grain and flour through the steps without manual labor. In addition to flour, the gristmill produced cornmeal that was an important feed source for Washington's livestock and ingredient for his spirits made at the distillery. The distillery is a working reproduction of Washington's distillery where whiskey is still produced today. Alcohol played a large role in the lives of most people in the 1700's. It was consumed during social occasions, used medicinally and as a trading commodity. Learn about the milling and distillery process, as well as the opportunity to purchase items made from both during your visit. At the conclusion of your visit, you will depart for home with a dinner stop at your expense on the way.
