More About Book Club Focused on Family Separation
CASA of Cuyahoga County is pleased to announce that the third installment of our foster-care themed Book Club will meet on Thursday, Oct. 22 from 5-7 PM at the CASA program’s downtown office, 2800 Euclid Ave, Ste. 620, Cleveland., OH 44115.
This free, moderated book club and accompanying reception will include a discussion of Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate, a 2017 New York Times best seller depicting the tragedy of the Tennessee Children’s Home Society and the abuse perpetuated by its founder Georgia Tann. The book follows the lives of a fictional sibling group separated by Tann during the Great Depression, and how their modern-day descendants come to terms with the resulting and devastating family secrets.
CASA of Cuyahoga County will provide discussion questions and share about the needs of local children and youth experiencing foster care and family separation, along with ways that community members can get involved by serving as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs). Light refreshments will be served. More than 450,000 American children experience family separation each year, with many of them residing in foster care. Children separated from their families, even for valid safety reasons, experience trauma and often face daunting challenges, including a higher risk of poverty, homelessness and transience as young adults. Youth aging out of foster care are also more vulnerable to addiction, trafficking, and eventually entering the criminal justice and prison systems.
