More About The “I Should Be Happy” Trap: When Expectations Make Depression Worse 🎁
The holidays carry a powerful message: this is supposed to be the happiest time of year. For someone experiencing depression, that expectation can make difficult feelings even heavier.
Three things can happen:
1. Guilt gets added to sadness: Feeling low is hard enough. Believing you are wrong for feeling that way can create another layer of shame. 💭
2. Comparison becomes louder: Photos of celebrations and smiling faces can make someone believe everyone else is enjoying the season more than they are.
3. Hiding becomes easier: When happiness is expected, someone who is struggling may feel pressure to perform it rather than admit they need support.
You do not have to force yourself to feel festive. A difficult emotional season deserves compassion, not judgment.
