More About How to Ask a Teen About Their Mental Health Without Making It an Interrogation 🗣️

When parents are worried, it is natural to ask question after question. But a teen who feels examined may shut down instead of opening up.

Try a different approach:

1. Start with what you notice: “You seem quieter lately” can feel less threatening than “What is wrong?” It opens the door without demanding an explanation. 👂

2. Choose the right moment: Teens may talk more easily while driving, walking, cooking, or doing something together. Eye contact is not always necessary for meaningful conversation.

3. Leave room for silence: You do not have to fill every pause. Giving your teen time communicates that they do not need to produce the perfect answer.

Are you concerned about your teen? Schedule a private consultation with SMD Associates to learn how to open the conversation without closing the door. 👩‍💼
