  • - The Bedford County Historical Society is still seeking nominations for “Historian of the Year” for 2016. The nominee will be honored at the Annual History Banquet on Saturday, April 29, 2017 held at the Hall at Kinton’s Knob.

    CRITERIA: Contestant … Any Resident/Group/Citizen of Bedford County or Member of the Historical Society of Bedford County.

    QUALIFICATIONS: Involved in the past year (2016) with the history of Bedford County through research, restoration, writing, collection, preservation, etc. This may be a cumulative work over a period of years, but it needs to have been finished, accomplished, or completed in 2016.

    Please submit nominations in the form of a letter or essay stating why you feel the nominee is worthy of this title. Please send nominations no later than January 27, 2017, c/o “Historian of the Year” Committee, Bedford County Historical Society, 6441 Lincoln Highway, Bedford, PA 15522.

    - Monthly distribution of food to income-eligible residents of the Everett Area School District who are registered through the Bedford County Food Bank.
    Volunteers are always needed and can help on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of pantry week.
    This pantry survives on donations from community primarily, along with some state and federal program monies. All staff, including managers are volunteers and all donations go to purchase food, except for a small amount for office supplies and insurance.

  • - The Bedford County Historical Society will hold its quarterly meeting on Saturday, January 21, 2017, at 2:00 pm at the Hall at Kinton’s Knob (BCHS, 2nd Floor), 6441 Lincoln Hwy, Bedford. Larry Smith, Bill Snyder, and Commissioner Josh Lang will give a presentation (complete with costumes) about the John Lukens Survey of Bedford Town in 1766. This program was presented in June 2016 at the Bedford County Court House during the plaque dedication commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the survey. The plaque can be viewed in the courtyard of the Court House.

    Also at the meeting, the BCHS will announce the results of the recent board election.

  • - THE BEDFORD COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO PRESENT “THE JOHN LUKENS SURVEY” AT QUARTERLY MEETING

    The Bedford County Historical Society will hold its quarterly meeting on Saturday, January 21, 2017, at 2:00 pm at the Hall at Kinton’s Knob (BCHS, 2nd Floor), 6441 Lincoln Hwy, Bedford. If you didn’t have an opportunity to attend the 250th Anniversary of the Lukens Survey last June that was held at the Bedford County Court House, we invite you to join us for a special re-enactment of the program. Attorney Bill Snyder will portray John Lukens and Commissioner Josh Lang will represent the 1st Constable of Bedford Township, Joseph Cochran. The plaque commemorating the 1766 survey can be viewed in the courtyard of the Court House.

    Also at the meeting, the BCHS will announce the results of the recent board election and hold a brief membership meeting.

    - St. Valentine's Day celebrates the feasts of two Christian martyrs of this name. One, a priest and physician, was beaten and beheaded on the Flaminan Way at Rome, Italy, Feb 14, AD 269, during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. Another Valentine, the bishop of Terni, is said to have been beheaded, also on the Flaminian Way at Rome, Feb 14 (possibly in a later year). Both history and legend are vague and contradictory about details of the Valentines, and some say that Feb 14 was selected for the celebration of Christian martyrs as a diversion from the ancient pagan observance of Lupercalia. An old legend has it that birds choose their mates on Valentine's Day. Now it is one of the most widely observed unofficial holidays. It is an occasion for the exchange of gifts (usually books, flowers, or sweets) and greeting cards with affectionate or humorous messages.
