    - Did you know The Federal Aviation Administration has created specific guidelines (Part 107) for flying drones (UAS) for any purpose other than recreational or hobby use? This new set of standards outlines pilot eligibility, the license required to operate UAS both legally and safely, and the minimum level of aeronautical knowledge required and responsibilities of the Remote Pilot in Command. 2. A complete overview of the National Airspace System as it applies to UAS operations and the special operating requirements and ATC clearances (if required) for each type of airspace.

    3. A working knowledge of aviation weather reports and forecasts and weather related factors affecting the safe operation of the UAS.

    4. A complete explanation of additional areas of knowledge required to pass the FAA Knowledge Test for the Remote Pilot Certificate.

    - The British Interest Group of Wisconsin & Illinois (BIGWLL) will host Claire Brisson-Banks’ webinar presentation, “The Quest for Your English Roots”. Got English ancestors? Don't miss this webinar by Claire Brisson-Banks, an accredited genealogist (AG) in English research. English civil, church, and census records make doing research back to 1837 feasible. Pre-1837 research requires more skill and a greater knowledge of the variety of little-known resources which can take you back to the 1600’s and earlier. Add to that the variety of Internet resources and English research becomes a joy to perform.

Born in Rhode Island, Claire has lived in a variety of locations throughout the world with Missouri currently being her home. After raising a large family, she returned to education and completed her BS, MLIS and two AGs to further her career as an academic educator and an in depth researcher. She devotes much of her time in the fields of leadership, management, technology, genealogy, family history, forensics, librarianship and education in a multiplicity of avenues while staying on top of the latest advances in each field.

The meeting will be held at The Community Church (basement), 5714 Broadway St. Richmond, Illinois (2 blocks west of US Rt. 12) at 10am Saturday, January 21, 2017.

    - Drones are helping to create a whole new means of realizing the American dream. Michael Huerta, FAA Administrator

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) expects sales of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) for commercial purposes to grow from 600,000 in 2016 to 2.7 million by 2020. Commercial drones are used for aerial inspection, photography and survey in ever-expanding applications. In Illinois, the top ten industries* using drones are: Real Estate, Construction, Infrastructure, Agriculture, Filmmaking, Event, Utilities, Emergency Management, Advertising and Search and Rescue.

Learn how you can enter the unmanned aviation industry as a professional. Reserve your spot today for the free Commercial Drone Certificate Information Session at Harper College CE:

    Tuesday, January 24, 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Harper College, Building Y, Room Y106

The FAA has released the much-anticipated Part 107 regulations, which allow anyone to fly drones commercially after passing the Part 107 Aeronautical Knowledge Test. The Knowledge test is quite challenging, requiring the prospective Drone pilot to have a solid understanding of aeronautical charts, weather, weather reports, Air Traffic Control communications, and safe unmanned operations in both controlled and uncontrolled airspace.

Attend this information session to learn about the FAA requirements and the new Harper course to prepare for the Part 107 exam. The course also includes hands-on experience flying a commercial drone.

This program is intended for individuals intending to enter the Unmanned Aviation Industry as a Professional.

    - St. Valentine's Day celebrates the feasts of two Christian martyrs of this name. One, a priest and physician, was beaten and beheaded on the Flaminan Way at Rome, Italy, Feb 14, AD 269, during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. Another Valentine, the bishop of Terni, is said to have been beheaded, also on the Flaminian Way at Rome, Feb 14 (possibly in a later year). Both history and legend are vague and contradictory about details of the Valentines, and some say that Feb 14 was selected for the celebration of Christian martyrs as a diversion from the ancient pagan observance of Lupercalia. An old legend has it that birds choose their mates on Valentine's Day. Now it is one of the most widely observed unofficial holidays. It is an occasion for the exchange of gifts (usually books, flowers, or sweets) and greeting cards with affectionate or humorous messages.

    - President's Day observes the birthdays of George Washington (Feb 22nd) and Abraham Lincoln (Feb 12). With the adoption of the Monday Holiday Law (which moved the observance of George Washington's birthday from Feb 22 to the third Monday in February), some of the specific significance of the event was lost and added impetus was given to the popular description of that holiday as President's Day as a day to honor all former presidents of the US, though the federal holiday is still Washington's Birthday. Annually, the third Monday in February.

Chekhov’s masterpiece examines a family on the edge of ruin and a country on the brink of revolution. The story follows a once wealthy family struggling to save their estate, which has been put up for auction to pay their debts. Will they sacrifice their past glory to save their beloved orchard or will denial and inaction seal their fate? By turns tragic and comic, the play is a bold meditation on social and economic change that is as relevant today as it was 100 years ago!

    - McHenry County Illinois Genealogical Society's monthly meeting will feature Jane Haldeman who will present "Researching Colonial America".

Did your ancestor live in one of the Original Thirteen Colonies? Were they here before the Revolutionary War? If so you possibly have Colonial American Ancestors. Each colonist came to the “new world” for different reasons and each colony was different. They come for both religious and economic opportunities. Find out what records are available and where they are so you can learn about your Colonial American Ancestors.

Jane Haldeman is a professional researcher, speaker and owner of “It’s Relative”. She lectures in the Chicagoland area including parts of Wisconsin and Indiana as well as at state and national conferences. Jane was President, Illinois State Genealogical Society; President, Fox Valley Genealogical Society; Registrar, Fort Payne Chapter NSDAR; and Registration Chair, Federation of Genealogical Societies 2016 Conference in Springfield, IL.

The Cherry Orchard Auditions: December 5 and 6, 6:30 p.m., Studio Theatre (open to the community)
