    - On this date in 1773, the Sons of Liberty, some disguised as Native Americans, boarded three British vessels at Griffin's Wharf, Boston Harbor. Contents of 342 chests of tea were dumped into the harbor as a protest against the Tea Act of 1773 by the American Colonists.

  • - On this date in 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright, after 3 years of experimentations with kites and gliders, achieved the first documented successful powered and controlled flights of an airplane. The flight was sustained for less than a minute but represented man's first powered airplane flight and the beginning of a new form of transportation.

    - Dec 21 - Mar 20. In the Northern Hemisphere winter begins today with the winter solstice, at 5:23 PM, EST.
  • - 1970. After writing President Richard M. Nixon offering to be a "Federal Agent-at-Large" to fight drug abuse and the drug culture, Elvis Presley met with Nixon at the White House on this date. Presley was not made a federal agent, but the two men had a cordial meeting. The photograph of them shaking hands is the most requested reproduction from the National Archives.

    Christmas Eve is celebrated with large family meals featuring traditional dishes. Presents are exchanged and opened, many homes have their Christmas trees lit up, mistletoes hung, and other decorations, such as holly and ivy, at this time of the year.

    Some historians say the holiday developed because servants were required to work on Christmas Day, but took the following day off. As servants prepared to leave to visit their families, their employers would present them with gift boxes.

    - Dec 26- Jan 1, 2019. African- American family observance created in 1966 by Dr. Manulana Karenga in recognition of traditional African Harvest festivals. This seven-day festival stressed unity of the black family, with harvest fest (karamu) on the first day and a day of meditation the final one. Kwanzaa means "first fruit" in Swahili.

    - January 7, 1927, basketball promoter Abe Saperstein's "New York Globetrotters" took the floor on this date at Hinckley, IL. Despite the "New York" name, the Globetrotters hailed from Chicago's South Side. The talented African-American players, unable to play in white professional leagues, barnstormed the nation in serious basketball promotional events. They changed to the "Harlem Globetrotters" in the 1930s and added humor to their games in the 1940s.

    - Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara, CA. NCAA Division I college football playoff champion will be decided in this game with the combatants determined by the new College Football Playoff system.

  • - On January 13, 1968, in a landmark concert, country music star Johnny Cash performed in front of 2,000 inmates at Folsom Prison at Folsom, CA. Backed by the Tennessee Three and accompanied by June Carter, Carl Perkins, and the Statler Brothers, Cash performed in the prison cafeteria. The concert was recorded as a live album and was a worldwide hit. Cash's choice to play to the prisoners cemented his reputation as a hero to the downtrodden.
