2018 (Not Rated) 72 min. USA
    Director: Sky Bergman
Cast: 40 adults for whom age is just a number

Lives Well Lived is a feature documentary film by Sky Bergman that celebrates the incredible wit and wisdom of adults 75 to 100 years old who are living their lives to the fullest. Encompassing over 3000 years of experience, forty people share their secrets and insights to living a meaningful life. Their intimate memories and inspiring personal histories will make you laugh, perhaps cry, but mostly inspire you.

“Sky Bergman set out to collect wit, wisdom and life stories from people often called “elderly” or even “the old old” – between the ages of 75 and 100. She presents her subjects as ordinary folk, but most are extraordinary in their own ways.” – Tatiana Craine, VILLAGE VOICE

“A warm uplifting and enlightening feast for the heart, mind and soul.” – Avi Offer, NYC MOVIE GURU

“The stories are eventful and moving, and well supported by archival photos and footage.” – Mark Jenkins, WASHINGTON POST

“Every one of the 40 seniors interviewed in this beautifully respectful and affectionate doc about aging emerges as a star. Bravi!” – David Noh, FILM JOURNAL INTERNATIONAL

    My Afternoons with Margueritte
Friday, September 28 at 9:15 pm

    2011 (R) 82 min. France/subtitles
    Director: Jean Becker
    Cast: Gérard Depardieu, Gisèle Casadesus

My Afternoons with Margueritte is the story of life’s random encounters. In a small French town, Germain, a nearly illiterate man in his 50’s and considered to be the village idiot by his friends at the local bistro, takes a walk to the park one day and happens to sit beside Margueritte, a little old lady who is reading excerpts from her novel aloud. She’s articulate, highly intelligent and frail. Between Germain and Margueritte, there are 40 years and 200 pounds difference. Germain is lured by Margueritte’s passion for life and the magic of literature from which he has always felt excluded. As Margueritte broadens his mind via reading excerpts from her novel, Germain realizes that he is more of an intellectual than he has ever allowed himself to be. Afternoons spent reading aloud on their favorite bench transform their lives and start them both on a new journey – to literacy and respect for Germain, and to the deepest friendship for Margueritte.

“Margueritte is played by Gisèle Casadesus, a spry still beautiful 96-year-old veteran…and one of the pleasures of Becker’s film is being able to feast your eyes on a face like hers, which has an entire lifetime etched into its lines.” – Anne Billson, THE ARTS DESK

“There’s no reason this French charmer should work, but it does and there’s the beauty of it.” – Marjorie Baumgarten, AUSTIN CHRONICLE

“It’s a lovely movie.” – Mike LaSalle, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

Did he really call his shot? Some Disagree, some eyewitnesses and Cubs pitcher Charlie Root believe he did not. Even Babe Ruth's Daughter said that he denied it, but Babe himself also claimed he did it.

    2017 (Not Rated) 110 min. France/subtitles
    Director: Christian Duguay
Cast: Dorian Le Clech, Batyste Fleurial, Patrick Bruel

This heartwarming adaptation of Joseph Joffo’s enduring memoir tells the story of the Nazi occupation through the eyes of two young Jewish boys struggling to survive on their own. Paris, 1941: Joseph and Maurice are the sons of Roman, the local barber. At 10 and 12, the boys have so little understanding of the persecution of Jews that Joseph thinks nothing of swapping his yellow star for a bag of marbles. Despite their naiveté, Roman knows that their best chance to escape the Nazi roundup is to flee on their own to Vichy, France, where their older brothers Albert and Henri have found safe haven. Always one false move from tragedy, these tenacious urchins survive on courage, ingenuity and more than a bit of cunning as they make their precarious way through France hoping to reunite with their family. More than anything, it’s their brotherly bond that gets them through their ordeals. Patrick Bruel resonates as the Jewish family patriarch Roman, while newcomers Dorian Le Clech and Batyste Fleurial register an almost agonizing vulnerability as hapless innocents trying to outrun the barbarous machinery of war.

“The writing and its attendant characterizations have an undeniable integrity, the particular historical detail offered by the story is not common in films about this era, and the lead performers are moving.” – Glenn Kenny, NEW YORK TIMES

“This isn’t the first film to try to deal with the horrors of the Holocaust from a child’s perspective, but it’s tricky material, and this one succeeds because it is direct and forthright.” – Walter V. Addiego, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

“The great value of Christian Duguay’s film is the degree to which it makes such a barbaric and bewildering chapter in human history comprehensible for young audiences.” – Matt Fagerholm, ROGEREBERT.COM
