  • | 3:00pm - 5:00pm | Arts and Entertainment, Auburn Winds, community, concert band, Brian O'Donnell
    - Mark your calendar to join Auburn Winds, Auburn’s official town band, for a FREE community band concert on Sunday, April 30. The concert theme is “Musical Journeys” and begins at 3 p.m. at the historic, Auburn State Theatre (Auburn Placer Performing Arts Center), located at 985 Lincoln Way in Auburn. Admission is free, with tax-deductible donations gratefully accepted.

Conductor Brian O’Donnell described this performance as a “musical journey through the history of American marches, and a trans-European tour.” Selections will include The Empire Strikes Back, a John Williams medley including “Star Wars (Main Theme),” “The Imperial March (Darth Vader’s Theme),” “Yoda’s Theme” and more. The band will also play Mark Camphouse’s Yosemite Autumn, which Camphouse composed during a visit with his family to Yosemite National Park. He was inspired by the awesome beauty that surrounded him during this visit from the fog rolling across the valley floor to the spectacular waterfalls and mountains. Other pieces will include The Thunderer by John Philip Sousa, Washington Grays by C.S. Grafulla and Gustov Holst’s First Suite in E-Flat for Military Band. The band will also chronicle the journey of Peer Gynt from northern Europe into the deserts of North Africa by performing Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite.

O’Donnell, who has played French horn since age 9, is currently pursuing a Master of Music in orchestral conducting at California State University, Sacramento, under Leo Eylar. He is also assistant conductor of the Rancho Cordova Civic Light Orchestra, and graduate assistant conductor of the California State University, Sacramento’s symphony orchestra. Originally from San Diego, O’Donnell now lives in Sacramento, with his wife of two years, Megan.

“I want to help incorporate music into the Auburn community,” said O’Donnell. “I want to capture the love that these musicians have for their work and show it to our audiences! We are the official ‘Town Band,’ and now it is my goal for the ensemble to be the ‘TALK of the town!’”

A community band has existed in Auburn for more than 150 years, and the members of Auburn Winds are proud to carry on that tradition. The 40-member band is made up of volunteer musicians who are excited to share their talents with you and your family. The band performs more than a dozen times a year, including four formal concerts at the Auburn State Theatre. The band, and its small ensembles, also participates in many community events each year such as Auburn's Fourth of July Celebration, Auburn Cruise Nite, Gold Country Fair, Auburn's Old Town Country Christmas, Auburn’s Veteran's Day Parade and more.

    Upcoming performances:
    • Formal Concert, “Musical Journeys,” April 30, 3 p.m., Auburn State Theatre
    • Auburn Cruise Nite, May 12 at 6 p.m., Auburn Promenade, Downtown Auburn.
    • Mother’s Day Event, May 13 at 11 a.m. at Eisley Nursery.

“We are looking for experienced musicians to join our fun group of players,” said spokesperson Lori Yarborough, who plays alto saxophone. “We rehearse Wednesday evenings at E.V. Cain School in Auburn, and we have openings for the following instruments: trombone, euphonium, bassoon, flute, oboe, percussion and French horn.”

    - The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. Our Task Force is a privately funded organization whose purpose is to encourage participation on the National Day of Prayer. It exists to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer, to create appropriate materials, and to mobilize the Christian community to intercede for America’s leaders and its families. The Task Force represents a Judeo-Christian expression of the national observance, based on our understanding that this country was birthed in prayer and in reverence for the God of the Bible.
