  • | 6:00pm - | Library Events, Munster, Film
    - Columnist and author, Jerry Davich, will preside over a discussion of his newest book: 'Crooked Politics in Northwest Indiana.”

Defined by a tangled web of deception for more than a century, Northwest Indiana's political culture involved secret handshakes, tapped phone calls, backroom deals and murder. Found submerged in his car with a rock on the gas pedal, city official Babe Lopez's execution-style murder rocked East Chicago. Shot and killed at a political fundraiser, power broker Jay Given's murder occurred while four hundred guests mingled in a neighboring room. Former Lake Station mayor Keith Soderquist stole thousands of dollars from his reelection campaign and the city's food pantry account to gamble at local casinos.

Join Jerry's exploration of the hidden political scandals and highly publicized court cases of public servants once sworn to serve and protect.

    About
If you are the type that will WALK MILES TO GET TO A SECLUDED BEACH, this is your spot. On your way to the beach you will walk through the remnant of the once-widespread wetland system called Cowles Bog. The bog encompasses a marsh surrounding a small fen, where a stand of tamaracks and white pines grows on a floating mat of peat moss. Starting near the guardhouse in the northeastern part of the site, a boardwalk trail passes marshes and ponds that host horned grebes, black-crowned night herons, buffleheads, and a myriad of other water birds. You can hike right out to the beach and back on 4.5 miles of interconnecting loop trails. Two trailheads serve the trail system, each with a portable toilet. Parking is very limited and needless to say there are no lifeguards making the trek out to this secluded beach.

The park's 16.5 miles of trails allow you to explore all these habitats, which shelter diverse wildlife and provide excellent birding. Scan the open water for ships, beachcomb, and take in the sweeping backdrop of the dunes. Watch birds on the open water, feeding at the water's edge, or from the small bird observatory in the park’s Nature Center. The park provides camping, picnicking, showers, snack bar, camp store, and a park naturalist. In summer, the park offers a small gift shop and swimming beach with lifeguards. Interpretive naturalist programs are held daily between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and on weekends the rest of the year. Visitors wanting to see or hike tall sand dunes are encouraged to visit Indiana Dunes State Park and do The 3 Dune Challenge (click for details To complete The 3 Dune Challenge, a person must hike a special 1.5 mile course at Indiana Dunes State Park, climbing Mount Jackson (elevation 176 feet), Mount Holden (184 feet), and Mount Tom (192 feet). Some parts of the trail feature 40-degree slopes, making each step that much more, well, challenging. In the sandy vertical climbs, it’s common to take two steps forward and slide one step back. The 3 Dune Challenge’s dunes are significantly higher than the 125-foot Mt. Baldy. As for Mt. Baldy, it is just one of several Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore sites, and the other sites remain open, including West Beach, Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk, Porter Beach, Kemil Road Beach, Dunbar Access Point, Lake View Picnic Area and Central Avenue Beach. Explore this website or call Indiana Dunes Tourism at (800) 283-8687 for more information. Note that Mt. Baldy will remain closed until further notice while scientists investigate unexplained holes that have opened up on its surface. Mt. Baldy is the only site where such issues have been reported.

    - S.K.I.P.P.E.R.S meets this Thursday at 6 p.m. at Lowell Church of Christ. The support group is for cancer survivors, spouses, caregivers, teens and children.

Adult sessions offer acceptance, compassion, coping skills and hope. Come together with those who are facing challenges similar to yours. We are often afraid of our wounds, afraid to offer them to others unless they are packaged neatly. This group is a safe space to present your challenges---even the messy ones! Feel accepted, share your experiences, help others, learn coping skills and ultimately find HOPE.

Children's sessions offer games, crafts, snacks and fun. This group offers an environment for children to find HOPE within themselves through Jesus. Children learn about feelings and emotions---what they are what they might look like and how to handle them. No child is required to share their situation, but they will periodically be asked if they would like to share.

All groups have at least one facilitator. Kerri Midkiff facilitates the Cancer Survivor Group. Dick and Judy Downs facilitate the Caregiver/Family/Friend group. The facilitator for the Children's Group, grades 1 to 5, is Amanda Huber. The facilitator for the Children's Group, grades 6 to 12, is Robyn Sepko.

    - If the art of motion intrigues you, or the expressions of our body's emotions inspire you, then Kaliedoscope is the performance you must see. Sit back and let the artistic vision of IBT Kaliedoscope Director Amanda Tuohy take you on a colorful journey of life's emotions in this modern-contemporary dance concert. "Company dancers and I are thrilled to present Kaliedoscope and allow their work and dedication to play out on the stage for audiences," explained Amanda Tuohy.

"The audience will recognize some of our performance songs including XAmbassadors "Unsteady," Coldplay's "Fix You," A Great Big World's "Say Something," Andra Day's "Rise Up," Birdy's "People Help the People," and "Not about Angels," and Queen's "Somebody to Love," Amanda added. She said other numbers included music from Piano Guys, Orb, Roisin Murphy, A Fine Frenzy, and more. With the excitement and versatility of television's "So You Think You Can Dance," Kaliedoscope delivers a powerful combination of movement and artistry, which capture the essence of human emotions. "This is the type of show you would expect to see in Chicago and we look forward to sharing this genre with local and neighboring communities," Amanda said.

Kaliedoscope is April 1st at Theatre at the Center in Munster at 7pm; tickets are $18. IBT has a special, limited time offer where guests can see TWO IBT shows in April (Kaliedoscope & Cinderella) at a discounted rate of $35 total for both evening performances. If you would like to meet Director Amanda Tuohy and the IBT Company Dancers over appetizers and spirits, attend the Kaliedoscope "Emotion in Motion Reception" at 6pm; tickets are $45 - which includes the 7pm show.
