    - Alchemy in 13 Postures – a Weekend Retreat at Eastover, July 21st-23rd

Yang Cheng Fu’s 13 Original Postures is a short, but extremely powerful taijiquan form. It is valuable to experienced taiji practitioners who feel they are ready to take their practice to a new level, and to beginners as well. If you are experienced and feel you are not rooted, fully present or energetically connected throughout your whole form, then you may just find this workshop is what you are looking for in order to reach the effortless power that is promised in the classics.

At higher levels, taijiquan promises not just good health and robust vitality, but also radical Presence, effortless power, and an opportunity to resonate with the Tai Ji, the undifferentiated Wholeness that is the Ground of Being. Most important, it shows us how to bring all this into the lived life.

In over a quarter century of teaching, Rick Barrett has always tried to shorten the on-ramp to high-level gongfu by simplifying and de-mystifying the language of internal martial arts. Sure, the work still has to be done, but the journey is a lot more satisfying when you know what you are going for and how to get there. His almost 40 years of taijiquan research has been driven by a radical empiricism: Does it do what it says it does? Can I FEEL it? Can it be shared with others? Can it be replicated? Does it lead to further discovery?

Right from the start, I want people to not just be able to successfully execute the movements of a form, but to also feel their qi, their jin, and their root. Not just awakening to the energy that animates all things, but learning to use it effectively.

Yang Cheng Fu’s 13 Original Postures was taught to Rick by Master Yang Fukui, who learned it from his great grand uncle, Zhai Yongwen.
    This form:

Is short enough to cover in a weekend.
Its large frame postures can be a physical workout.
    Generates an impressive Qi.

Rick Barrett has been teaching Chinese internal martial arts and practicing energy healing in New York City for over a quarter century, and has been studying for almost forty years. His two primary teachers are William C. C. Chen and Yang Fukui. Rick’s investigations into the martial side of taijiquan led to several national championships in taiji Push Hands and to develop what he calls “Love-based Martial Arts.” He demonstrates clearly how the martial artist is empowered by love and hindered by fear and anger. Rick is the founder of Tai Chi Alchemy and has published two books, Taijiquan: Through the Western Gate and Finding You in a World of It. Influenced by Martin Buber’s I and Thou, the integral philosophy of Ken Wilber, and the research of cell biologist James Oschman, Rick has developed an effective way to quickly and dependably access energetic coherence, heightened states of consciousness, and authentic engagement…and to integrate that and more into the lived life. • | 8:15am - 9:30am | Religious Events, Beach, Church, Worship, Free, Fairfield, Southport, Service, Fairfield County
    - Fairfield residents and visitors are fortunate to be surrounded by magnificent seaside beauty. John Muir once noted, "No synonym for God is so perfect as beauty.” so it’s fitting that when the warm weather approaches we look forward to worshiping outdoors. This Sunday, July 2nd begins the first Sasco Beach service of the season. A wonderful tradition which began 30 years ago typically draws about 125 people -- as well as a few seagulls and other wild and domesticated creatures. These outdoor services provide a spectacular setting to celebrate life as we commune with God and one another. Participants dress casually in shorts and t-shirts - wearing sunglasses and sipping coffee while enjoying the music, messages, and savoring the scenery. Parishioners may arrive by car, kayak, on foot and bike. Beach chairs and blankets replace pews, and Long Island Sound dotted with sailboats serves as a scenic backdrop as waves splash softly on the shore. “To be outside seems to bring me closer to God” said one participant, “It’s a tranquil and beautiful way to start the day”. Services begin at 8:15AM and take place rain or shine. The ministers and congregations of Southport Congregational Church and First Church of Fairfield invite individuals of all ages and affiliations to worship God in the splendor of Sasco Beach. Please celebrate the abundance of love, life, comfort, peace, health, grace, and joy with us this summer. For more information please contact Pam Poling in the Southport Congregational Church office at 203-255-1594. Chapel services at Southport Congregational Church, 524 Pequot Ave. are at 10am, and Fairfield First Congregational Church, 148 Beach Rd., are also still held throughout the summer at 10:15am.

    - Flying Phoenix Qigong from Mt. Ermei, China ~ at Eastover July 27-30

An intensive Qigong workshop teaching participants the essential core practice of Flying Phoenix Heavenly Healing Chi (Fei Feng San Gung), a rare and extraordinarily powerful medical Qigong system created more than 400 years ago by Taoist sage named Feng Teh of Ehrmei Mountain in Xichuan province in western China. Flying Phoenix Qigong is a complete Taoist monastic system of hygienics --comprised of standing and seated, stationary and moving meditations that imparts a wide range of salient health benefits: increased respiratory power, improved circulation and metabolism, well-regulated sleep and resulting higher energy levels, improved neuro-muscular function and balance, strengthened immunity, increased bone strength, and the allostatic reversal of many signs of aging. Besides its splendid health benefits, Flying Phoenix Qigong training so sublimely integrates mind and body to a higher level of structural sensitivity--by bringing all the organ functions under the regulation of the subconscious mind—that it stabilizes full absorption-jhana and trains one-pointedness (samadhi) so that the practitioner’s mind easily rests in the second and third jhanic states. (FP Qigong is also so systemically sensitizing that strict safeguards must be observed as to where and when one practices the art so as to prevent any type of sudden interruption.) Please see our website for more information and a link to the program schedule - click for details or call 866 264 5139.

TERENCE DUNN, Ph.D, is an expert instructor of Chinese martial, yogic, and healing arts with more than 39 years of training based in Los Angeles, CA. Since 1990, he has popularized Tai Chi Chuan, an authentic Qigong practice throughout America and Europe through his highly acclaimed Tai Chi for Health and Chi Kung For Health DVD programs. Terry has also pioneered the practice of Tai Chi and Qigong in modern medicine and professional sports. Educated at Yale College and the Harvard Business School, Terry is a gifted teacher, author and filmmaker who expresses an ecumenical vision in preserving some of the most rare and powerful arts found in China's martial, yogic, and spiritual traditions. Terry Dunn's 39 years of experience in Chinese holistic health practices includes more than 32 years in T'ai Ch'i Ch'uan, Qigong and Chinese methods of meditation, and more than 30 continuous years in three styles of Chinese boxing (kung-fu). He has studied authentic Kung-Fu arts under some of the most renowned Chinese martial art masters of the twentieth century. Dunn is an instructor in the Southern Sil Lum Five Animals Kung Fu, Taoist Elixir Method, and the legendary "Eight Sections of Energy Combined" Kung Fu.

Terry taught Tai Chi and Chi Kung courses at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for many years, and wrote the first medical protocol in American medical history applying therapeutic Tai Chi and Qigong exercises to accelerate patients' recovery from major surgeries. In 2000 and 2001, Terry became the first Tai Chi trainer in the NBA, training the Los Angeles Lakers during their second championship season, conducting a 50-minute Tai Chi and Kung Fu warm-up and conditioning regimen at the start of every practice. Terry is the creator of the all-time best-selling Tai Chi for Health DVD series (released in 1991) and the six-part Chi Kung For Health series (released in 2003) teaching the remarkable Flying Phoenix Celestial Healing Qigong.

"Because of the great interest in Qigong in the west, it is important to have bona fide teachings by bona fide teachers. Too often students wind up learning a little bit of this form and a little bit of another, while never learning any complete system. This series is a good example of a serious and gifted instructor who offers a complete system of healing qigong to the serious student." -- Solala Towler, Editor, The Empty Vessel -- Journal of Contemporary Taoism

    - This war is also known as the First World War or the Great War. It was a global war originating in Europe that began on July 28th,1914 and lasted until November 11th,1918. The assignation of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife by a Serbian nationalist is what provoked this war. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, which was the formal beginning of the war.

    - Patriot Day falls on 11th September (also commonly known as ‘Nine-Eleven’) and is remembered globally as the anniversary of the catastrophic terrorist attacks on the USA of 11th September 2001.

Embedded in the memories of everyone who lived through it, this was the day four jet planes were hijacked and crashed into the New York World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, causing the deaths of 2,977 people. The fourth plane (United Airlines Flight 93) was directed at Washington DC, but its passengers bravely attempted to take back control and it crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The large majority of those lost after the attacks on the Twin Towers were working at or above the points of collision; thousands of people who had gone to work that morning like every other day, found themselves suddenly stranded at the top of a burning skyscraper. A number made the choice to jump from the flaming buildings rather than wait to be caught by the flames or for the building to collapse. No one could forget the terrifying and heartbreaking stories and images captured by the news footage of the day.

In the wake of the World Trade Center collisions, many brave men and women from the emergency services risked their lives to try to help rescue victims of the attacks, and of them 411 lost their own lives attempting to fight fires and rescue people.

Patriot Day is recognized by US law as the official day of remembrance for these tragic events, and has been observed every year since. Each year on this day, American flags are flown at half-staff to honour and commemorate those lives lost. The US President asks fellow Americans to observe a moment of silence at 8.46am (Eastern Daylight Time), the time of the first plane collision into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

While the events took place within the USA, the shock and grief experienced in response to the attacks was shared across the globe, and for this reason Patriot Day will be observed not only in America, but all over the world
