  • | 6:30pm - | Arts and Entertainment, Edwin McCain, Country, music, Live
    - EDWIN MCCAIN Called the ͞great American romantic͟ by the New York Times, Edwin McCain has built an enviable career over the past 20 years by balancing his massive pop success with the year-round touring schedule of a tireless troubadour. His hit songs, authentic spirit and surprisingly affable sense of humor keep fans coming back time and time again for nights that feel more like parties with old friends than rock concerts. After recording two of the biggest love songs in the history of pop music, McCain now performs upwards of 100 shows annually throughout the US as a solo artist, with his full band or his acoustic trio. Recently, he’s added orchestras to his repertoire, performing with symphonies in select markets where he brings his powerful songs to majestic new heights. Those enduring love songs (and wedding must-haves) ͞I’ll Be͟ and ͞I Could Not Ask For More͟aren’t just for the romantic at heart; ͞American Idol͟ and ͞The Voice͟ contestants turn to Edwin’s ballads every single year to help them win over judges and fans alike (just ask last season’s AI winner, Nick Fradiani). Even Justin Bieber has been known to belt out ͞I’ll Be͟during his own concerts. Earlier this year, McCain suddenly found himself with a whole new crop of fans when his ͞Flipping Ships͟ television show debuted on Animal Planet and became one of the highest rated new programs for the network. During the season, Edwin happily juggled his two jobs, filming the show by day and headlining concerts at night.͞The 15-year-old me would have crawled through a river of fire to be the 41-year-old singer/songwriter that I am today, and I remember that. I am incredibly grateful to be able to do this.

    - SOCIAL JUSTICE + RUNNING = FREE MOVEMENT

    Why running?

We want to build healthier lifestyles, and we want to create more social (and so more sustainable) social movements. Running, walking, and running together is a great way to do both. By coming together to exercise, we enhance each other’s wellness while crossing lines of race, gender, class, culture and faith in fellowship, solidarity and conversation. We gain the energy, courage and momentum to inspire change.

To join is simple. Just show up and ready to participate!! You are welcome to one of our t-shirts. Every once in awhile, we’ll pitch you an event, like an artists workshop, political gathering or community dinner, and we’ll need your email for that, but that’s about it. Most Free Movement events are free, but if you’re anxious to contribute, we’re happy to take a donation.

  • | 7:30pm - 9:00pm | Local Events, Music, Concert, Symphony, Orchestra, Pops
    - The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra is pleased to welcome back Tony Award Winner Linda Lavin in the headlining role for a special Symphony Pops performance! Lavin will be accompanied by pianist Billy Stritch, bassist Tom Hubbard, jazz violinist Aaron Weinstein, and drummer (and husband) Steve Bakunas. Sure to be a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day, the concert takes place on Saturday, February 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Wilson Center.

Join us for an evening of great music in the style of Arthur Fiedler's Boston Pops! In his fifty-year tenure as Pops Conductor, Fiedler established the Boston Pops as a national icon. His programs were an extremely successful blend of classical and popular, - - from jazz to pop, film music to Broadway, light classics to the Great American Songbook, - - while also showcasing popular artists alongside up-and-coming young American soloists.

Linda Lavin's Broadway career began in 1962 in the musical A Family Affair. In 1967 she appeared as Gloria Thorpe in a television version of the musical Damn Yankees. By 1975, after various guest appearances on episodic television series, she landed a recurring role on Barney Miller, which she left after two years to accept the lead role in Alice. The hit show aired for nine years. This was only the beginning of a long and lucrative career.

Also taking a turn in the spotlight will be the inspiring performances of the winners of the Wilmington Symphony's 2016 Student Concerto Competition: Junior Division, Aria DiLoreto, violin; High School Division, Daniel Cheng, piano; and UNCW Division, Quentin Lovette, baritone.

    - St. Valentine's Day celebrates the feasts of two Christian martyrs of this name. One, a priest and physician, was beaten and beheaded on the Flaminan Way at Rome, Italy, Feb 14, AD 269, during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. Another Valentine, the bishop of Terni, is said to have been beheaded, also on the Flaminian Way at Rome, Feb 14 (possibly in a later year). Both history and legend are vague and contradictory about details of the Valentines, and some say that Feb 14 was selected for the celebration of Christian martyrs as a diversion from the ancient pagan observance of Lupercalia. An old legend has it that birds choose their mates on Valentine's Day. Now it is one of the most widely observed unofficial holidays. It is an occasion for the exchange of gifts (usually books, flowers, or sweets) and greeting cards with affectionate or humorous messages.
