    - Shawnee State Park opened in 1951 is a beautiful 3,983-acre park that features a 451 acre lake. Shawnee is located adjacent to Rt 30, Schellburg PA, just 10 miles west of Bedford. The park was named for the Shawnee Indians who originally inhabited the area. The area surrounding the park was used as a trade route and military road during the French and Indian War. General John Forbes built the Forbes Road (which the modern-day U.S. Highway 30 parallels) to send supplies from the ports in Philadelphia and Baltimore to a force of British soldiers under his command as he tried to capture Fort Duquesne from the French in 1758.

Shawnee State Park has a 293 site campground. The sites are modern with some electric hook-ups. There is a centrally located bathhouse with flush toilets, hot showers and a sanitary dump station at the campground. Camping season usually begins with trout season opening in mid-April and ends at the conclusion of deer season in late December.

In addition to modern campsites, there are yurts available, a lodge, and youth group camping area.

In 2017 Shawnee State Park was recognized as "Park of the Year" by the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation.

Shawnee State Park is open for year-round recreation. There are 15 miles (24 km) of trails open for hiking and some are open to biking. Five pavilions are spread throughout the park along with numerous picnic tables.

Shawnee Lake is a warm water fishery. It is stocked with game fish by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. The common fish are walleye, pickerel, smallmouth and largemouth bass, northern pike, muskellunge, catfish, crappie, yellow perch, bluegill, bullhead, sucker and carp. While pleasantly warm for swimming, and supportive of the above fish, Shawnee lake is too warm to support a trout population. There are three boat launches at Shawnee Lake for electric and non powered boats only. Gas powered boats are prohibited at Shawnee State Park. All boats must have a current registration with any state or a launch permit from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. The beach at Shawnee State Park is open daily from Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day weekend

Go for a day, weekend or longer and visit this beautiful Tri state area park.

  • - National Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 29 honors the men and women who served and sacrificed during the longest conflict in United States history.

It was on March 29, 1973, when combat and combat support units withdrew from South Vietnam. Generations later, Veterans of this time period are gaining the respect that was not so freely given upon their return. Involving five U.S. presidents, crossing nearly two decades and 500,000 U.S.military personnel, it left an indelible mark on the American psyche.

Returning Veterans did not always receive respectful welcomes upon their arrive on American soil. There were 58,000 killed, never to return. National Vietnam War Veterans Day recognize the military service of these men and women who answered the call to service their country when she needed them. They didn’t make the decisions to go to war.

On National Vietnam War Veterans Day, we recognize the service and duty rendered by all servicemen and women of this era.

    HOW TO OBSERVE

Around the country, commemorative events, speeches and luncheons are being held inviting Vietnam Veterans as honored guests. Thank a Vietnam Veteran. Buy them a drink or lunch. Send them a shout out using #VietnamWarVeteransDay on social media.

    HISTORY

U.S. Sens. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., and Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., introduced legislation in 2017 to honor Vietnam Veterans with a day on the anniversary of the withdrawal of military units from South Vietnam. President Donald Trump signed the Vietnam War Veterans Day Act on March 28, 2017, calling for U.S. flags to be flown on March 29 for those who served.

    - Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates. Deuteronomy 11:18-20

Classes for all ages! If you are not involved in a Sunday school class, I really encourage you to find one that you can grow in. Studying God’s Word is never a mistake. Don’t worry if you don’t know the answers, there are teacher’s guides to guide you, curricula to use. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to pronounce every name and place. I’ll give you a hint, the others in your group won’t know the difference.

Will you be there next Sunday?

We should not stop gathering together with other believers, as some of you are doing. Instead, we must continue to encourage each other even more as we see the day of the Lord coming. Hebrews 10:25

Fun things to do in Springfield

Since 1986 the Town Planner Calendar has been keeping families across America up-to-date about events and other fun things to do right in their hometown.

Delivered free of charge every December to millions of homes across America, our full-sized, full-color calendar is a time-tested and beloved tool for helping families stay organized. The large date blocks are not only loaded with lots of nearby events and fun things to do, there's plenty of room for you to record your own family's important events like birthdays, anniversaries, parties -- anything you have planned -- so everybody in the house can see them whenever they go to the fridge, out the front door, or wherever you choose to display it.

But there's more! Every calendar is full of coupons from popular local merchants, so you can save money while supporting small businesses right in your hometown.

And don't miss our beautiful full-color photography! Every month you'll recognize a new photo from someplace close to home, submitted to us by a local photographer. If you'd like to have your own hometown photos included in our calendar, please contact your local publisher for more information.

We truly believe it's better to "keep it local". From coast to coast and border to border, our network of franchisees work with organizations and merchants right in their community to make sure you get the information and savings you care about. We prefer to feature family-friendly events that are a short walk or drive away, and coupons from local businesses so you can support your hometown economy.

If there's something happening close to home that folks in your neighborhood need to know about, why not submit it to us today? Please note that publication of your event is subject to approval by your local Town Planner publisher.

If there's no Town Planner calendar in your area, you could be looking at a great business opportunity! Town Planner franchisees set their own hours and can work out of their homes while providing a valuable service to both homeowners and local businesses in the area.
