    - 1871. Great fire of Chicago began, according to legend, when mrs. O'Leary's cow kicked over her lantern in her barn on DeKoven street. The fire leveled 3 1/2 square miles, destroying 17,450 buildings and leaving 98,500 people homeless and about 250 people dead. Financially, the loss was $200 million. On the same day, a fire destroyed entire town of Peshtigo, WI, killing more than 1,1 people.

Herbert Birch Kingston, a philanthropist and candy company employee wanted to bring happiness into the lives of the sick, orphans, shut-ins and others who were forgotten by distributing candy to them. Thus, Sweetest Day was born. Today is the day to do something nice for someone that will make him or her say, "Oh, that's so sweet!" Annually, the third Saturday in October.
