  • - McHenry, MD – There is still time for new and returning students to register for classes for the upcoming spring semester at Garrett College. Spring semester will officially begin on Tuesday, January 23rd at the College’s McHenry campus.

Prospective students, whether full or part-time, with an interest in attending Garrett College should have a very good chance at obtaining a full schedule of courses. This includes transfer students. “We understand that all prospective students have different interests, needs and lifestyles,” stated Mike Tumbarello, director of enrollment management at Garrett College. “We try to accommodate our students with a variety of programs, courses, course times, online offerings, and locations.”

For example, Tumbarello explained that hybrid and online courses at GC, which are being offered this coming spring semester, may appeal to those trying to balance education with work and family. Hybrid courses typically meet just once a week, while the remaining instruction is provided online.

It’s also not too late to get help paying for college. Financial aid staff can guide prospective students and parents regarding federal, state, and local financial assistance, including the Garrett County Scholarship Program. For questions regarding financial aid, persons may contact the Financial Aid Office at 301-387-3080.

Garrett College also participates in GI Bill education and training benefits and other military assistance programs. Veterans and active duty members of all branches of the U.S. Armed Services interested in starting or returning to college should contact the Financial Aid Office to discuss military educational benefits.

Local high school students interested in getting an early start on college also are encouraged to consider taking courses at Garrett College. High school students over the age of 16 may take courses that don’t conflict with their regular school day. Home schooled students are also welcome to join the population of dual students at Garrett who earn high school and college credit at the same time.

For more information about opportunities at Garrett College, please contact the Office of Admissions at 301-387-3044 or admissions@garrettcollege.edu. The Office of Admissions is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

  • - Winter getting you down? It just started. Rather than just enduring the cold, dark months, why not embrace all that winter has to offer to residents and visitors of the Tri State area.

We are truly blessed with winter activities. Located with 90 minutes of my home in Cumberland are 10 very nice ski resorts, a plethora of areas to go cross country skiing, frozen lakes and ponds for ice skating and ice fishing, hills and mountains for sled riding, and ample open spaces for taking that quiet walk in a snow covered woods! Your interest run to Snowmobiles, snowshoeing or even dog sledding,,,yep we got that too!

Following is a list of ski resorts located within the Tri State area that offer many varied recreational activities for winter fun!

    • Whitetail Ski Resort Mercersburg, PA (North of Clear Spring Md) click for details
    • Cannan Valley, Davis WV click for details
    • Timberline Four Seasons Resort, Davis WV click for details
    • White Grass Touring center, Davis WV (Cross Country Ski) click for details

    • Hidden Valley Resort, Hidden Valley, PA click for details
    • Laurel Mountain, Boswell, PA click for details

In addition to these resorts, there are many State Parks that offer cross country skiing. Two of our favorites are New Germany State Park in Grantsville, MD and Laurel Ridge State Park, Confluence PA. both offer groomed trails and ski rentals.

Ice fishing does not quite hold the charm for me that it does for many, but I see fishermen on the ice at Lake Habeeb at Rocky Gap State Park near Flintstone, MD, and at Deep Creek Lake State Park as well as other locations. Check out the respective state Natural Resources website for information and licensing requirements.

If you always wanted to try dogsledding, Husky Power Dogsledding is one place that will make that desire a realty. They are located near Deep creek lake in Accident, MD click for details

So don’t just sit inside and bemoan the cold weather…embrace it. Get outside and enjoy!
